Baptism is a gift
In baptism, the Holy Spirit unites us with Christ and the entire body of believers. In baptism, God sets free from all that binds us and gives us a new life of freedom in Christ. We are also welcomed into a new family – the church – whose foundation is the love of Jesus Christ. Baptism is permanent. You only need one baptism because God’s promises never fade. Nothing you do in this life can take away God’s promises and faithfulness to you!
Baptism comes from Jesus. Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan river (Matt 3:13-17) and sent his disciples into the world baptize all believers (Matt 28:19). The Church has been baptizing people in the name of the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) ever since.
In baptism, God chooses us. This is why Lutherans commonly baptize infants, because baptism doesn’t depend on any special human knowledge or ability. Baptism depends on the steadfast faithfulness of God. People of all ages are invited to the baptismal waters, where we are washed clean of our sin and brokenness and made new by God (2 Cor. 5:17).
Because baptism is a gift for all of God’s people, we celebrate baptism in the public setting of worship. The assembly of God’s people also make promises to help you fulfill your promises to faithfully live out your baptismal calling.
How do I get baptized at Bethel?
If you desire to be baptized, or have a child baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church, please contact Bethel’s Family Ministry Director, Mandy Toms. Mandy will work with you to set up a meeting with our pastor and find a date for this very special event!
